MR. HEUGHAN’S FAREWELL
TOWN HALL CONCERT The popularity enjoyed by Mr. William Heughan, the Scottish actorsinger, was sufficient to give .him another crowded house at the Town Hall on Saturday evening, when the Auckland season concluded. The singer selected his programme from English, Irish and Scottish songs, also including one or two operatic airs and ballads. The programme was pleasingly varied and proved very entertaining. Probably the most popular was “The Song of the Volga Boatmen,” given in English. Mr. Heughan was also warmly applauded for his singing of the New Zealand native song, “Waiata Poi.” Rimsky-Korsakoff’s, “The Song of the Viking,” and .Mozart’s “Within These Sacred Bowers,” sung in Italian, were both given excellent treatment. Of the Scottish melodies. “Scot Wha Hae,” “Wi a Hundred Pipers,” and “The Barrin’ o’ the Door,” were the most noteworthy. An Irish song of the popular variety, “The Mountains of Mourne,” and a Somersetshire ballad, “Dashing away with a Smoothing Iron,” were also given. Miss Maud Bell contributed several very enjoyable ’cello items, and piano solos by Miss Gladys Sayer, who also gave every satisfaction as accompanist, were much appreciated.
