RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE SPOTLIGHT” The story of a grirl who sacrifices her own personality and identity to gain fame, and then wishes desperately to be herself again. That is “The Spotlight,” a Paramount picture starring Esther Ralston, which will be shown at the Rialto and Regent Theatres to-night. The action centres about the stage, with the heroine struggling to gain renown behind the footlights. How she finally does win greater success than she had ever dreamed of, and then longs to cast it all aside to obtain happiness, makes the story an exceptionally absorbing one. Intimate and authentic scenes of backstage life are given in til picture, as much of the action occurs in the star’s dressing-room. Beautiful gowns add their allure, and on able supporting cast, including Neil Hamikon as the leading man. and Nicholas Saussanin as the theatrical producer, contribute to make an excellent picThe 13th Hour,” a powerful mystery drama, starring Lionel Barrymore, will also be shown. Dolores Del Rio, whose latest picture, "Ramona,” a film version of Helen Hunt Jackson’s Indian love classic, is shortly to be released in New Zealand, is scheduled to make seven United Artists pictures. The first of these seven will be “Revenge,” based on Konrad Bercoviei’s story, “The Bear Tamer’s Daughter.” “Ramona” is a gripping story of early California, and is filled with romance, as if those witnessing it on the screen were turning the pages of golden’ history in the days of the Missions and the Spanish dons.
