DELIGHTFUL COMEDY

“LILIES OF THE FIELD”

The delightful three-act comedy, “Lilies of the Field," by J. Hastings Turner, was presented in the Town Hall concert chamber on Saturday evening by the Auckland Comedy Flayers in aid of the funds of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The “lilies of the field” are the twin daughters of the Rev. John Head, vicar of Wideleete. Their grandmother on their birthday offers one 10 yards of crepe de chine and the other a trip to London. The deciding of who is to have the trip to London and who is to be the possessor of the crepe de chine soon spreads chaos in the household of the vicar.

The play has been produced by Miss Una Buddie and she has made the most of its possibilities. The cast has been well chosen, the whole contributing to an amusing and clever comedy. The honours went to Mr. W. H. Graham as the vicar. He gave an amusing portrayal of the man who is not master in his own home and his striving against his stubborn mother-in-law and his modern daughters was cleverly done. As the grandmother Mrs. Susan McCallum was excellent, never relaxing for one moment. Margot Finlayson and Joy Bartley weer the charming twins, and the male roles were filled by J. N. Gordon and Montague Steele. Constance Clark was the vicar’s wife and smaller roles were filled by Ysolinde McVeagh and Hamish Henderson.
