THE Auckland Racing Club's winter carnival was continued to-day in fine weather. The chief attraction was the Great Northern Steeplechase, and this, together with the holiday, was responsible for a very large attendance. The track was still a bit on the soft side.

Clockwork’s Surprise There was a big surprise in the opening event, the Hunt Club Cup. Clockwork, who had run well in the Green Lane Steeplechase the first day, returning a long double-figure price. Geyserland was a warm favourite with £2,579, with good money for Importer £1,590, Prince Lupin £1,433 and Syndicate £1,352, the winner carrying £342. The favourite fell at the third obstacle —the first on the hill, where Clockwork was ten lengths clear of Marita, Mashoor Prince Lupin, Rafferty and Odin. Over the double on the flat Clockwork had a slight lead over Marita, the pair being followed by Mashoor, Syndicate, Odin, Prince Lupin, Importer and Rafferty. On the hill again Clockwork and Marita were together ahead of a reduced field. Importer and Syndicate going well behind them, with Prince Lupin a long way back. Clockwork led to the last fence from Importer and Marita, with Syndicate, Pompeius and Prince Lupin a long way off, and they finished in this order, Clockwork winning by two lengths from Importer, with Marita seven lengths back. Fifty yards away was Syndicate, and Pompeius ten lengths off. At intervals came Prince Lupin and Rafferty, with Haeremai last. Geyserland broke his neck when he crashed. The Fox Comfortably Twenty contested the Ranfurly Handicap, the winner being the favourite, The Fox, who scored comfortably. Betting favoured The Fox £2,137, Lord Abbey £1,106, Te Waka £1,035, Arikitoa £1,002 and Restaurant £895. Orchus began best from Wyoming, Lord Abbey, Appellant, The Fox, Killute, Modest Boy, Brampton, Speechless, Arikitoa and Moe Hall. Running to the half-mile Lord Abbey and The Fox were well clear of Orchus, Wyoming, Modest Boy, Eager P.ose and Killute. Coming into the straight Lord Abbey and The Fox were three lengths in advance, followed by Modest Boy, Killute, Orchus, Eager Rose, Te Waka, Arikitoa, Moe Hall and Speechless. In the run home Lord Abbey weakened, and The Fox went on to win by three lengths from Lord Abbey, who was a length and a-half in front of Modest Boy, with Killute another half length away under the judge’s box. Having a sequence of wins to his credit, Red Fuchsia was made favourite for the Remuera Hurdle Race, being entrusted with £6,414, as against £6,151 on Aberfeldy and £5,868 on Mia Bella. Potoanui was slow to move, while Red Fuchsia led over the initial obstacle from Mia Bella and Karamu. Going past the stands, Potoanui was in command, being four lengths in front of Karamu, who was seven lengths ahead of Red Fuchsia, with Aberfeldy and Mia Bella next. Going along the back the order was the same, but approaching the five-furlong post the field closed up. At the third fence from home Vexatious toppled over, and Glen Canny lost his rider. When the second to lost fence had been negotiated, with the exception of Mia Bella, who fell, Red Fuchsia and Aberfeldy were practically on terms, with Potoanui and Kauri Park next. Aberfeldy screwed at the last obstacle, giving Red Fuchsia an advantage which he successfully maintained, to win by four lengths. Henderson’s Double As the result of his win on Saturday, Beau Cavalier came in for big support in the Great Northern Steeplechase, carrying £3,472 in comparison with Glendowie £2,795, and Maunga £2,783. At the start Maunga and Passin’ Through were slow to move away, and Beau Cavalier accepted the role of pacemaker. Passing over the hill Beau Cavalier led Comical, Wiltshire and Glendowie, Wee Marble falling at the first fence. As they passed the stands the first time Beau Cavalier led Mangfani and Comical, and in attendance came Comical, Wiltshire, Glendowie, Tuki, Brigadier Bill, Mangani, Passin’ Through and Maunga. Climbing the hall the second time Beau Cavalier had an advantage of two lengths over Comical, and Wiltshire and Glendowie were next. Comical ran past Beau Cavalier approaching the double and led him over that fence, but ran off at the second of the double. At the next obstacle, the stone-wall, Maunga fell, Mangani lost his rider and Passin’ Thorugh was pulled up. Bqau Cavalier was noticeably tiring at this stage, Glendowie subsequently going into the van and as the hill was reached was three lengths ahead of Wiltshire who was a further four lengths in front of Tuki, who led Poari, who fell at the first fence on the hill. Beau Cavalier was well back at this stage. Entering the straight, Glendowie still had a substantial lead from Tuki, with Wiltshire next and Beau Cavalier a furlong behind. Glendowie was not busteled at the finish and easily held his own to win by six lengths from Tuki, who beat Wiltshire by twelve lengths. Beau Cavalier was the only other contestant to finish the course.
