BORROWED £3OO TO STAVE OFF POLICE

ENGLISHMAN TELLS PLAUSIBLE TALE OF MONEY FROM HOME (Special to THE SUX) NAPIER, Friday. _ The story of how a well-dresesd Englishman is said to have attempted to obtain from a wellknown Hawke's Bay resident a considerable sum of money by "alse representations, was unfolded in the Police Court to-day. Colin Coryton appeared on remand, charged with obtaining from Ellen Caroline Lowry, .of Okawa, at Rotorua on April 5, the, sum of £3OO by falsely representing that he had a letter of credit for £I,OOO at the National Bank'of New Zealand at Nelson. He was further charged with, on March 27, at Whangarei, obtaining from David Wyllie,* a Rolls-Royce car, valued at £9BO, by., saying that he had another letter of credit for £I,OOO on Lloyds. Bank in London. Messrs. J. Vigor Brown and P. Wright, J.P.’s; were on.the Bench. Inspector D. J. Cummings prosecuted, and Mr. A. 11. D. Mayne appeared for accused and Mr. W. Humphries for Mrs. Lowry. In reference, to the first charge, Airs. Lowry, in evidence, said that the accused told her at Rotorua on April 4 that." the police would take action against him unless he could pay £250 to Parr and Blomfield, of Auckland, by noon the following day. Coryton assured her that he had a letter of credit for £I,OOO at Nelson, and next morning he said he had a cable from his sister in London stating that the money would be sent as soon’ as- the banks opened after the Easter holidays. On the strength of these assurances witness advanced him £3OO. The following Wednesday the bank manager told witness that no money' had arrived from London, and witness told the manager to hold the cheque. Frederick Edward Bowen, manager of the wool department of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Napier, corroborated Mrs. Lowry’s evidence. Sergeant Quayle gave evidence that the accused made a statement at the Police Court this morning in which he admitted that he had no letter of credit in the bank at Nelson. Coryton, who was arrested at Greymouth on May 5, pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The hearing of the second charge was adjourned to June
