Auckland Holiday
King’s 63rd. Birthday Brings Crowds to City CARNIVAL ON MONDAY All Auckland will join with the rest of the Empire in celebrating on Monday the 63rd birthday of his Majesty King George, which is to be observed then instead of tomorrow. Chief among the diverse attractions the city will offer for the entertainment of the holiday crowds now pouring in from all parts is the Auckland Racing Club’s winter carnival, which begins at Ellerslie to-day. If the weather remains fine the lawns will present a pleasing and colourful picture. For those with other inclinations there will be seen in the Domain on Monday morning one of the most spectacular naval and military ceremonial parades held in Auckland for many years. The units will assemble on the Cricket Ground and will be inspected by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson. Later, King’s Empire veterans will be the guests of the Auckland City Council, the Patriotic Association and the Returned Soldiers’ Association at a lunch in the Town Hall. His Excellency will also attend the function. INFLUX OF VISITORS During the past two or three days there has been a heavy influx of visitors from North and South. The accommodation at all city hotels is taxed and the arrival of the Aorangi from Sydney on Monday will further add to the heavy bookings. Numbers of city dwellers are taking advantage of the protracted “weekend” to spend two or three days away from Auckland. Large numbers left last evening for various pleasure resorts and extra carriages had to be put on to the second express. Most sports bodies have arranged special holiday fixtures. Golf and bowling clubs have organised matches. Followers of Association football will find diversion in the representative game between Waikato and Auckland, to be played at Blandford Park* in the afternoon. A curtain-raiser match between the Navy and Auckland B will create ’interest. An Auckland representative Rugby team will play Waikato at Hamilton. League matches have been arranged, and the Auckland Hockey Association will hold its usual seven-a-side tournament at Remuera.
