The race was a chapter of accidents, only five of the contestants surviving the journey. Beau Cavalier was first over the initial hurdle, where Aberfeldy came down, Master Gamp and Royalform being the next to follow Beau Cavalier. Vexatious fell at the next fence, and along the back Beau Cavalier was six lengths clear from Mister Gamp, with Karamu three
lengths further back, Mia Bella being at the head of the others some distance away. When the straight was reached, Beau Cavalier had increased his lead to 10 lengths, but round the top turn Master Gamp reduced the gap considerably, and was several lengths out from Mia Bella, who was followed by Maunga, the favourite being well back. Aongl the back Master Gamp ran up to the eader, and Karamu fell, while Pouri came down at the next obstacle. Beau Cavalier was jumping better than Mister Gamp, and Mia Bella had closed on the leaders. At the second to last fence, Mister Gamp crashed, and Mia Bella closed on Beau Cavalier, tlfi pair turning into the straight well clear of Maunga, with Wedding March anrd Royqlform, who was interfered with when Pouri fell, well out of it. Beau Cavalier led over the final jump, and although Mia Bella mad© a gallant effort, she was tiring, and had no chance of overtaking Beau Cavalier, who passed the past amid great enthusiasm, a winner by two and a-half lengths. Maunga was seven lengths away third. Wedding March, who was next to finish, was 200 yards away, and 150 yards further back came Royalform.
