PICKED UP AT SEA
SCHOONER’S BOAT FOUND LOOK-OUT FOR HUANUI A boat belonging to the schooner Huanui was picked up at sea by j the Union Company’s steamer Waipiata, en route from Wellington to Auckland, yesterday. The master of the steamer reported the discovery by signal to the East Cape lighthouse at 10.30 p.m. yesterday, stating that he found the boat nine miles south of East Island. Although there is as yet no actual cause for alarm the Marine Department has requested all masters to keep a look-out for the Huanui. It ; may be that the boat was washed overboard during tho stormy weather | experienced earlier this week. On the I other hand, it is also possible that somthing may have happened to the schooner herself. Tho Huanui was at Auckland about a month ago, when she underwent annual overhaul and survey at this port. She then loaded a cargo of steel for East Coast ports, leaving at the beginning of May for Gisborne and Napier. The vessel then proceeded to Wellington, and was reported to have left there at 5 o’clock on Monday evening last, May 28, for Gisborne." In all probability she was carrying a cargo of benzine. Captain T. Thomsen is master of the Huanui, the vessel carrying a crew of five. She is a wooden ketch with a 60 h.p. oil engine, and is registered as 144 tons gross. She was built at Auckland in 1910.. Her dimensions are: Length 84ft, breadth 24ft, and depth 7ft. She is owned by Messrs. F. Goodman and L. G. Clare, of Gisborne.
