SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE

SECOND ROUND STARTS TO-MORROW

A.FJV. WILL STAGE ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME

sees the start of the second round of the senior championship Soccer series with the four leadingteams engaged at Blandford Park. The big- game between Thistle and Ponsonby should provide a thrilling- clash as the Ponies have won the last five games and pulled close up to the leaders. Y.M.C.A. and Shore should provide an equally exciting curtain-raiser between two- lively elevens. Onehunga will be at home to Belmont find Northcote entertain Trams on the new ground across the Harbour.

In spite of strong counter-attractions, the tempting bill of fare at headquarters should be alluring enough to retain the allegiance of the Soccer enthusiasts, and provide some strenuous moments. Thistle is still in the lead, but is by no means invulnerable, and with a run of five sterling victories on end the Ponies are now playing right up to the form which landed them in the proud position of the Dominion’s champion club last year. Onehunga is another team which startled the Soccer fans with a surprise victory over Thistle, and has felt the strain ever since, but the Manukau men should be too good for Belmont at Onehunga to-morrow. Tramways have to travel across the water to meet Northcoje, and holiday pressure on the service will weaken the team; but it should be able to bring back the winning points. REV. GENE TUNNEY? Henry Ford, on his return from Europe recently, dined with Gene Tunney, heavyweight boxing champion of the world. “You should be a preacher,” he told Tunney. “What young people need is good advice and good example. You have a couple of million dollars now, and more won't do you any good. Try preaching.”
