Fields to Compete In The South
RACING AT OTAKI AND DUNEDIN BELOW the prospects for to-morrow's racing at Otaki and Dunedin arc reviewed. The former gathering will attract most interest here, where, incidentally, sportsmen will be able to fellow up Wanganui form, which may prove to be the best guide.
AT OTAK! Although all Auckland will be at Ellerslie this week-end, sportsmen who follow form in a very practical manner will have half an eye, as it were, on the Otaki and Dunedin meetings, particularly the' former. The former will race to-morrow and on Monday, whereas Dunedin will carry on until the following Wednesday, holding the same dates as Ellerslie. The fields at Otaki are of the usual dimensions and class, and the racing should be of the keenest. The horses engaged in the principal event, the Raukawa Cup. are more numer-
ous than is generally associated with this race. Among them is Glenross, who is certain to b€> well backed after the promise he showed at Wanganui. The Absurd gelding may find the journey a bit too far, although he has won over a mile and a-quarter (the Rangitikei Cup), and perhaps it may be advisable to wait for Monday. In the sprint, the field is above the average class, and the winner looks like being hard to find at a glance. The draw on this course will be a big factor. The following promise to be heavily supported in their engagements; Tararua Hurdles: HYMESTRASON and GLENGARIFF. Kuku Maiden: CONSENT and TCHEKA. Waitohu Hack: CHELONE and CALLANMORE. Raukawa Cup: VESPERUS and BEAUMONT. Otaki Hack: AVRO and LIEUTENANT BILL. Huia Handicap: LIMITED and FIRST ACRE. Te Horo Hack: MAUI and SHINING STAR.
THE RIDERS E. Reed rides Royal Lover, Keddar, Bisox, and Pangolin. R. J. Mackie rides Mount Shannon, Essential, Horomea, and Argue. A. G. Murray rides Patearoa, Wanderlust and Fee Simple. C. Broughton rides Le Champ and Valcluse. R. C. Stratton will be on Callanmore. T. Metcalf rides Dancing Star, Ring Boy, Epistle, Dreamy, Volplane, and Closefire. H. Gordon's rides include Atareria and possibly Hymestrason (first ci*.v) in their jumping engagements. . N. Stratton will ride Redbank. B. M. Morris will have the mount on Holus Bolus in the Te Horo Hack Handicap. L. G. Morris rides Glenross and Avro. AT DUNEDIN Not by any means the meetings that they once -were, nevertheless the Dunedin fixture is still regarded as up to metropolitan standard. The fields for the opening day to-morow are not of the strongest, only a small number having paid up for the big steeplechase, while the principal fiat event has attracted quite a good field, despite the croakings of the local pessimists. There are only two North Island horses, Black Mint and Royal Game, figuring among the acceptors, but it is significant that no less than 13 exNortherners are down to compete. The course at Wingatui is certain to be heavy, and when it is that way it is said to be worse than Ellerslie. The Otago Hurdles, the leading event over the battens, is not to be run until Monday, and to-morrow’s form should serve to show the eventual winner. The following horses are expected to be favoured on the totalisator for their engagements on the opening day: Trial Hurdles: HARD PRINCE and SCION. Brighton Handicap: MALMSLEY and CAR! NTH lA. Birthday Handicap: BLACK MINT and TABOO. Otago Steeplechase: SCAMP and GREENSTONE. Tradesmen’s Handicap: NINE OF SPADES and ANTRIM BOY. Hunters’ Steeplechase: NYLOTIS and CAPTAIN SARTO. Jumpers’ Flat: JOVIAL and HAPPY WARRIOR. Winter Handicap: FAIRY HERALD and NINCOMPOOP.
