GILDED FRAMES
SIMPLE METHODS OF RESTORING Unless clean, fresh and well cared for, silt has a Peculiarly unpleasing effect. It behoves us, therefore, if we possess gilt picture or mirror frames, to care for them, even to the extent of regilding, which is not. nearly so diffie, llt a task as might be imagined. To Regild Frames Thoroughly dust the frames, then brush them with warm soapsuds. Do not attempt to dry the gilt after washing; just leave it. Next, mix well together: quarter pint of best spirits of turpentine, half pint of gold size, and two ounces of the best gold powder. This mixture you should apply carefully with a brush, going over every bit of moulding, etc. Leave to dry for three or four days—it will take all that time, if you are to make a good Job of it. Lastly, take a little size and a little gold pqwder—sufficient to make It adhere well—and go over the frame agafn, carefully, as before. The quantities given are sufficient for several frames, but the gilt must always be freshly made as required. To Restore Without Paint Supposing the gilt work you wish to renovate does not require regilding, yet is not quite fresh looking, take one and a-half pints of water mixed with one teaspoonful flowers of sulphur: add three fair sized onions, well bruised, and boil all together. Strain the liquid, apply it to the gilt work, and dry with a clean duster. Gilding on China It you possess any china which has gilt edges or ornamentation of any kind, never use soda when washing this. Soap is quite sufficient for the purpose and will not remove the gilt, as will soda.
