A GREAT IRISHMAN
Nobody naming’ the most distinguished three or four of Irish writers could forg-et James Stephens, or hesitate to include him. Perhaps he is best known by that medley of fantastic humour and fairy beauty, “The Crock of Gold’’; but he has done deeper and better work since then—in “The Demigods,” for instance, perhaps his finest novel, and in the retelling of old Irish legends, ‘‘The Land of Youth” and “Deirdre.” Macmillans published the “Collected Poems” about a year ago, and a new volume of stories, “Etched in Moonlight,” has just been published.
