HOPE HOPEFULS
Insurance and Smithfield will carry the Berkett blue and white livery at Hawke’s Bay on Monday. The former is a three-year-old gelding by Matchlight from Woodvere. and raced at Westport two months ago. After running third to Dillon Chimes and Prompter the first day in 3.50 1-5, Insurance, the next day. deacUheated for the big end of thejstake with Prompter, registering 3.47 2-5 for twelve furlongs. Smithfield, who is a seven-year-old son of Brent Locanda — Belette was prior to joining the Hope trainer's establishment, owned and trained by W. Bevan, the Westport trotting enthusiast, and a few seasons back showed considerable promise. He won a few stakes, but last season he only sported silk on one ocasion and appeared a difficult horse to get right. Leo. Berkett seems to have the happy knack of getting these chaps to come back, and should be succeed in getting the brother to Epigram right, he should soon be repaid for his trouble.
