NORTH SHORE BUSES

MANY NEW LICENCES The No. 2 Omnibus Licensing Authority, meeting at Devonport, issued new licences for buses last night to: North Short Transport Co., 26 buses; A. B. Bearsley, Stanley Bay, two buses; Blue Star Motor Service, Birkenhead, four buses: Cheltenham Motor Service, five buses; a total of 37 buses. Abour 12 other buses, owned by different companies, have yet to be licensed, bringing the total number of buses operating in the marine suburbs up to about 50. Drivers* licences were renewed for 40 applicants. The attention of the various bus proprietors is to be drawn to the necessity of landing passengers at the wharf in ample time to catch the ferry boats.

The Devonport Borough Council has also received many complaints regarding smoking in buses, and has instructed its inspector to take action.

lin), but after taking - the fences on ( the flat Pouri was pulled up and gal- ' loped on the grass. The Pace Tells Thrills came early. Polyphemus | baulking and slipping into the stone wall, sending Morrison flying. The j earlj- leaders were Comical and Brigadier Bill, and they were well clear of the remainder when they took the first fence on the hill. At the second there Brigadier Bill was a bit slow rising, and fell on landing. Comical was then left lengths clear of anything else, and he completed the course without a mistake, being 10 lengths in front over the last fence, the stone wall. Prince Lupin, Cureaform and Passin’ Through were not separated by much. Over the second fence of the double the last time Ruby Ring blundered and unshipped his rider, but the horseman, with a foot trapped in the stirrup, ; hung on to the reins and the horse i thus stopped—luckily for the jockey. Comical pleased once more, and on his j three showings over the hill in the i last few days he cannot be otherwise ! than favoured for Monday’s long and j tiring race over country. Lay on the Fence Morrison and Polyphemus then started again to complete the course, ! and jumping as big as the proverbial “house,” th gelding fenced slowly. At the first fence on the hill Polyphemus was caught in two minds, and wanted to refuse, but sent his rider over his head, the horse following in a halfhearted attempt. His forelegs got over, and there the horse was, straddling the fence, until by kicking and plunging he got over on the right side. That completed Polyphemus's education this morning. The horse boro signs of his adventures upon returning to the boxes, being cut about th© | legs, although not seriously. It was I not a good introduction to the Ellerslie country. The Hurdlers There was not a particularly interesting lot of schooling over the stfcks. Bright Bay (E. Warner), Hangawera (I. TilsonL Ramblin’ Kid (A. Campbell) and / Kilburn (L. Jarvis) were sent over four hurdles. The firstnamed fell at the first, but later completed tlie # journey, fencing nicely. Hangawera and Kilburn went fairly well in moderate time. Ramblin’ Kid falling at the last, his rider being lucky to escape, for he fell under the horse’s feet. Star of the East (H. Dulieu) and Pekatalii (Mcßae) both pleased in a fast bout over four hurdles, finishing together well clear of Pai Ana (Savage). It was a good performance on the part of the first pair. Pukerimu was given a similar task, alone, jumping wefL without much pace being on. Roman Abbey (W. Rennie) was given a lesson over four schooling hurdles on the inside, and jumped a bit big for a start. Gallops on Number One Thursby and Royal Tea were the first to begin operations on the flat, the pair travelling comfortably over five furlongs in 1.8. They strode over the first furlong in 15 1-5, and two in 26 4-5, there being very little between them at the finish, although Royal Tea was going the better. Catkin, who arrived yesterday, was allowed to move over half-a-mile nicely in 53 2-5, while Kelso got to the end of an easy five furlongs in 1.12. Restaurant and Segment were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.9 3-5, but neither was asked to do its best. a

Might Have Done Better Once again Corinax was set a task oyer a round, being accompanied by Piet, who slowed up when approaching the straight. At the six furlong post The Thorn joined in, but proved to be of little use to Corinax at the finish, the last-named having easily a length advantage. Corinax recorded 2.3 3-5 for the full journey, while the last mile took 1.54 2-5, and the last five furlongs took 1.12 1-5. The Cornwall Handicap candidate might have done a little better had he been required King Emerald pleased much better than Eager Rose at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.8 4-5. homin’.; commenced at the six furlong post and strode over the initial furlong in 12 2-5, two in 26 1-5. three in 40 3-5, and came home in 1.22. Storm Fiend was not bustled to get over five furlongs in 1.9 4-5, while Ballymoy II covered a similar distance easily in 1.13 1-5. Bulolo finished well clear of his stable-companion, Monetize, when the pair completed three furlongs in 39 2-5. Did It Easily Several horses subsequently improved upon the 2.6 3-5 that Beau Cavalier registered for a journey over a round, but the Chesterfield gelding had a lot in hand at the end and therefore it was a pleasing effort. The time for the last mile was 1.59, and the furlongs ticked off from there were: First two in 29, three in 43, first half-mile in 59, and five in 1.13 I 4-5. S Mountain Guide appeared to be going much easier than Kildeer at the end of six furlongs in 1.24. The former is on.the improve. Dave and Judge’s Box were ridden out to finish together at the end of half a mile in 52 1-s—a real good gallop. Dave still shows signs of lameness, but this is not affecting his speed. Miss New Zealand The best six furlongs of the morning went down to the credit of Miss New Zealand, who, with a light boy in the saddle, strode over the distance in 1.20 3-5, the last half-mile taking 53 3-5. The Te Rapa winner looks in great order. Scot Free and Marble Mount finished on terms over a round in 2.5, but both were doing it easily and could have improved upon that time. The last mile took 1.56 2-5. Nucleus, Princess Ronnie and Manly were associated over a round. Princess Ronnie was in the rear until reaching ' the straight, where she ran up to Nucleus, the pair being together on reaching th e post, with Manly eased well back. The time was good, too, for the round took 1.59 1-5, and the last mile 1.50 3-5, the first two furlongs from that post taking 26 3-5 and the first half-mile 54. Wiltshire is Well Looking a picture of fitness, Wiltshire was not asked to do much, his task being an easy round, which he covered in effortless fashion in 2.3 2-5, the last mile occupying 1.54 3-5. Wiltshire, who appears to be even better than at Easter, may be schooled over the hill on Saturday morning. Tuki and Miss Alma had at least a couple of lengths’ advantage over Maunga, when a task over a round in 2.4 1-5 was completed. Tuki did it well throughout, and he is in great order for Monday’s big race. Miss Myrtle had Captain Gazeley as a companion, the pair being timed to run six furlongs in 1.25. The latter is well. Mervette is Brilliant A rattling good round was that done by Mervette and Stormy, who both had big weights up. They covered the full distance in 1.57 3-5, the last mile being cut out in 1.49 3-5, and the last four furlongs in the very smart time of 53 2-5. Mervette was going very nicely at the end. and she may make a. good showing in the Cornwall Handicap. Stormy also went well, and he is not regarded as a good track worker. Blue Sffear, The Fox and Killute were associated in a bout over six fur-

longs, getting to the end of the first three in 40 2-5, and finishing up in 1.22 2-5. Kamehameha’s task was once round, a journey he covered in 2.3, while Abbot’s Delight and Spalmore also did strong work over the same distance. After a schooling essay Pouri was given a task over a rotmd. coming home without being unduly hurried in 2.4 2-5. From a slow start Arch Queen and Good Boy moved nicely over a round in 2.11 4-5. Over the same distance Kauri Park and a companion registered 2.0 4-5. Galloping Well Mister Gamp, Aberfeldy and Town Bank was the order of this trio as they finished up an essay over a round in 2.1. It was a nice work-out on the part of Mister Gamp, for the last mile took 1.53 1-5, which was not slow. Master Doon and Papatu were partnered over a round, the former doing it best at the end, notwithstanding that Papatu was on terms with him. The time for the round was 2.0, while the last half-mile took 56 4-5. Day Guard and King Smock moved pleasingly over five* furlongs, the last half-mile taking 54 2-5. Both were doing it well at the end, and it -was obvious that they are in great heart to meet their engagements. v On the Sand SLr Archie showed himself to be in great fettle by moving home from the five-furlong post in 1.7 4-5. He was under a good hold over the last part of the journey, and it was an excellent work-out for the Members’ Handicap candidate. A large number of other horses were also worked on this track, half and three-quarter pace being the general order.

WINGATUI FINALS A HEAVY TRACK OVERHAUL GOES WELL Press Association DUNEDIN, To-day. The weather conditions at Wingatui to-day were ideal for training, when the inside grass was again open. The course was rather holding. Rotor was too good for Stringbow over, six furlongs, the List taking 1.9. Antrim Boy strode out, covering four furlongs in 53 £ and Eyed Ova. Salmo 'and Bowline took 571. Chickwheat was sent six furlongs, the last five taking 1.12. Corn Money was just ahead of Nincompoop over six furlongs in 1.221. Lucy Locket and Carinthia were together at the end of five furlongs in 1.12, being well out from the trestles. Martis and Royal Saxon sprinted five furlongs in 1.7 1-5. A Long Gallop Overhaul jumped off with Tione for a 1J mile gallop. They were timed ! from the nine furlongs peg. Tione i dropped out after going five furlongs, Booster picking up Overhaul and they came home from there in 1.11 2-5, Overhaul covering the nine furlongs in 2.105. Zeuxis and Nine of Spades were together over four furlongs in 55 1-5, and Cupid’s Dart shaped badly over six furlongs in a gallop with Scottische, who covered the distance in 1.26. Toa Taua and Captain Sarto jumped four big fences nicely. Beauty Light and Busy Lad sprinted five furlongs in 1.10, Apache and Latin Quarter taking a fraction longer over a similar distance. A large number of horses were given useful work. Notes From Headquarters Wedding March did a strong working gallop. He looks well tuned up for his engagements in the; two Northerns, in which he is sure to be greatly fancied. It is expected that Perle de Leon will be allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Great Northern Hurdles and may be started in the Great Northern Steeplechase on Monday. No definite decision has been arrived at, but to-morrow there should be some definite intimation. The bad leg is yielding splendidly to treatment. Prince Papa and Marita, two from B. Cowan’s stable, will not meet their engagement in the Hunt Club Hurdles on Saturday. Present intentions axe to rac© Prince Papa in the Carbine Plate on the second day of the meeting.

RED COMET OUT OF G.N. HURDLES Red Comet was withdrawn from the Great Northern Hurdles at mid-day to-day. His defection was not unexpected. for he had not put in an appearance at headquarters up to this morning.
