ELECTION CAMPAIGN
UNITED PARTY OPENS WAITOMO CANDIDATE IN FIELD (From Our Own Correspondent) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday. Mr. W. J. Broadfoot. the official candidate of the United Political Party for the Waitomo seat, addressed a moderate attendance at Te Awamutu on Tuesday evening. This was the first meeting of his campaign. The deputy-Mayor, Cr. G. Spinley, presided. Mr. Broadfoot said that, for the past two years, there had been a growing dissatisfaction at the failure of the Coates Government to face the big issues confronting this Dominion. Every section of the community had been disappointed at the apathy and vacillation of the present Ministry, and the thinking people of to-day realised that the election pledges of the Coates party had been broken. Continuing, the speaker said the United Party had become a force to be reckoned with, and th© present Government was aware of it. In framing its policy the United Party had faced, not side-stepped, the big issues. The United Party stood for the drawing together of the sane, sound and progressive-thinking people to eliminate the present inefficient administration. The speaker also dwelt on the over, rating of. rural lands, the railw.\ s and their relation to settlement, and the unemployment question. At the conclusion of the address, Mr. Broadfoot was accorded a vote of thanks.
HAURAKI ELECTORATE FOUR LABOUR ASPIRANTS Four nominations of those desirous of carrying the Labour banner in the Hauraki electorate have been received. They are Messrs. J. S. Montgomerie, C. R. Petrie, E. Piggott and J. H. Edwards. Mr. J. S. Montgomerie, of Ihumata Road, Mangere, contested the by-elec-tion in the Franklin electorate on the death of Mr. W. F. Massey, and was defeated by Air. E. D. McLennan, the present member. Mr. C. R. Petrie, of Otahuhu, lias not previously aspired to political honours. He is chairman of the Otahuhu School Committee, and a member of the Otahuhu Borough Council. Air. E. Piggott, of Buckland, was defeated at the last general election in the Raglan electorate. Mr. J. H. Edwards, of Ho wick, has not previously entered public life. The selection of the official candidate will be made in Otahuhu at an early date. LABOUR AT NORTHCOTE ADDRESS BY MR. SAVAGE Under the auspices of the Nortlicote and Birkenhead branch of the Labour Party, Mr. M. J. Savage, deputy-leader of the party, addressed the electors in the Masonic Hall, Nortlicote, last evening. Mr. H. Weaver, Deputy-Mayor of Nortlicote, presided over a sparselyattended meeting. The speaker adversely criticised the land policy of the present Government. Referring to the present state of unemployment in Auckland, he contended as a member of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board that moneys spent by the board on relief should be a charge on the consolidated fund, and the local bodies should not have the levies increased. .He _ advocated a national insurance policy, also a national superannuation fund. In concluding, he asked for support for Mr. Osborne, «the selected Labour candidate for Waitemata. A number of questions were answered, and a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Savage for his address.
