WELLINGTON PLANS TO PIERCE HILLS £750,000 TRANSPORT JOB Press Association VfiLLINGTON, To-day. A commission has, for more than a year, been investigating the moans of access to the eastern and western suburbs of Wellington, which are cut off from the main part of the city by hills rising 500 to 700 ft. The commission has now presented * report, making recommendations which will cost £750,000 to carry out. They include the construction of a tr&m and traffic tunnel through the «astern hill to the suburb of Kilbirnie, Ul7ft In length, with new roads to connect at an expense of £317,000 for ’•h* main works alone. On the other side of the city a new road across the hill Is proposed, also the widening of Tinakori Road all tils way to Karori Cemetery, and bother road with a tunnel of 500 ft to connect Aro Street with Tinakori Road. These works would cost £124,000.

. In addition the purchase of the existing Kelburn tram is recommended, a view to duplicating it in order to provide for increased traffic. As an the construction of a cable tram trom a point in Willis Street o the same terminus as the Kelburn tram in suggested at a cost not stated.
