WAIHI INTERESTS The first of a series of lectures under the auspices of the Workers’ Educational Association was given in the Waihi Borough Chambers last night by Mr.- Stephens, B.Com. About 35 of last year’s members were present, and all enjoyed Mr. Stephen’s on “The Trend of Modern Social Thought.” After the lecture members were enrolled and a committee formed with Mr. IV. M. Wallnut, chairman, Mr. T. Watters, secretary, and Mrs. Long. Miss Barron, Mr. Long, Mr. Teasdale and Mr. Dabinett as members. KING COUNTRY NEWS A very successful shoot was held by the King Country Gun Club on the property of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Lund, Kaitieke, the results being: No. 1 shoot (points for Sherlaw’s Cup and medal), McKay and G. Bretherton tied for first with nine birds out of ten. G. Geary second with seven birds. No. 2 sweepstake, six birds: D. Todd, five birds, 1; Bretherton and Geary tied with four birds for second. No. 3 sweepstake, six birds: L. Persons, five birds, 1; Bretherton, Tod and Geary tied with four birds for second, and Bretherton won the shoot-off. No. 4 sweepstake, four birds: F. McFadyen and T. Ketu tied with three birds for first; Geary, Persens and J. Morgan tied for second. Mr. and Mrs. Lund provided afternoon tea for their numerous guests. Mr. W. S. Currie, who has held the position for a number of years, has been re-elected unopposed as chairman of the Ohura County Council. A race from Paekakariki was part of the Manunui Pigeon Club’s youngbird programme, J. Langwell annexing the trophy, a medal presented by Mrs. P. Williams.

Results: J. Langwell’s Struggletown, 1,169 yards per minute, 1; D. Wilson’s Mountain Star, 1.165.9 yards, 2; D. Andrews’s Howler, 1,162 yards, 3; P. Williams’s Rippling, 1,160.5 yards, 4; J. The Kaitieke Dairy Factory at Piriaka was successful at the Waikato Winter Show in gaining first place for best box of butter for export made by manager’s first assistant or buttermaker, the butter being made by M. W. Olsen. The factory also gained fifth place in the King George Challenge Cup, open class.

A number of roads in the Borough of Taumarunui have been gazetted as main highways, under the No. 6 Highways Board. These include all streets or portions of streets between the northern and southern boundaries of the borough, i.e., Rangaroa Stream and Matapuna Bridge, and all streets or portions of same between the Ongarup River bridge and Katarina Street.

The Taumarunui Rugby Union has resolved that no representative matches shall be played till after the cup fixtures are completed. The Railway Football Club is to be thanked for a donation of £ 2 2s to the union funds. Players are to be allowed nine days instead of three to make application for insurance claims. Mrs. A. W. Collett was successful in winning the special prize of a year’s free subscription given by ihe Sun, for the greatest number of entries at the Taumarunui Winter Show. PAPAKURA NEWS A meeting of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows Loyal Papakura Lodge was held on Monday in the Parish Hall, Papakura. Sister L. Grant, N.G., occupied the chair. The following lodges were represented: Franklin Past Grand, Pukekohe, Drury and Manurewa. Officers were installed by the installing officer, Bro. F. W. Grant, P.G., assisted by Bro. W. J. Best, P.D.G.M., as follow*: N.G., Bro. J. Stabler; V.G., Bro. A. Slessor; elective secretary, Sister F. Cummings; 1.P.N.G., Sister L. Grant. Members of the Presbyterian (Papakura) Church Choir met at the residence of the choirmaster, Mr. VV. Kidd, to bid farewell to their organist. Miss M. Cooper, who is leaving the trict. The Rev. R. R. Greenwood, pastor. in a eulogistic speech, referred to Miss Cooper’s good work and on behalf of the members of the choir presented her with a handsome brush and comb as a small token of the members’ good wishes. Mr. Kidd, choirmaster, and Mr. Moody also wished Miss Cooper success. Miss Cooper suitably replied. The annual meeting of parishioners of Christ Church, Papakura. was held on Mondaj' evening in the Parish Hall. The vicar. Rev. W. C. Wood, presided over a fair attendance.

The vicar in his report said that 31 candidates had been confirmed. The Daylight Saving Bill had been somewhat unfavourable to church attendances. During the year two tennis courts had been laid down and a church tennis club established. The choir, under the leadership of Mr. I*. Hardman, had shown a marked improvement.

The vicar expressed his gratitude for the comfort and convenience of the new vicarage. The vicarage account showed a total expenditure of £1,982 3s 3d.

Special thanks were accorded to Mr. J. O’Neill, lay reader. Miss F. Willis, organist, Miss Rollett, for providing flowers for the altar, and a host of willing workers for their work in the parish.

Mr. F. Lound, treasur€;r, presented the financial statement, which showed a total expenditure of £552, leaving a credit balance of £ 68.

The meeting unanimously directed the incoming vestry to introduce the envelope system of church finance. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the vicar for liis work in the parish.
