FORGER’S LAPSES EARN STIFF SENTENCE
GAOL FOR TWO YEARS Released from prison in January, Wilfred Lowe made his third lapse three months afterward, and was to-day sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Prisoner, who apeared before Mr. Justice MacGregor for sentence, had nothing to say. His offence was that of attempting to obtain money by false pretences. He also attempted to pass a forged cheque on an Auckland jeweller, using the signature of a wellknown business man. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. V. R. Meredith, said prisoner had previously been convicted of forgery. He was admitted to probation and repeated the offence, being sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. His latest effort to obtain money by dishonest means was his third lapse. His Honour, in passing sentence, observed that prisoner, who was 23 years old, came out from England in* 1923 and had since served sentences for similar offences. Lowe was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on each of two charges, the terms to be concurrent.
