STRAND

“THE MERRY WIDOW” A brilliant spectacle, “The Merry Widow,” the screen version of the world-famous musical comedy, is the current feature at the Strand, and is attracting in large numbers enthusiastic patrons desirous of viewing this romantic photoplay. John Gilbert, that dashing and handsome player, has the role of the royal lover, Danilo. Roy D’Arcy, splendid exponent of “heavy” roles, plays the Crown Prince to perfection; Tully Marshall is one with the scheming old Baron Sadoja whose patrimony supports an impecunious Court; King Nikita ably lords it over the Kingdom of Monteblaneo in the person of George Fawcett, and Mae Murray gives the presentation of her career. Several

featured players support this strong cast of principals, making the production a big winner. “Miss New Zealand” (Dale Austen) is also appearing on the stage, in conjunction with a vividly interesting film, “Miss New Zealand in Movieland,” depicting her adventures, travels and experiences in America.

Preceding the screening of the photoplay is a very effective prologue, in which Miss Ina Bosw'orth, the wellknown violinist, is the soloist. Mile. Valeska and Mr. Len Wilson present the entrancingly beautiful “Merry Widow” waltz, against a very beautiful stage setting. Eve Bentley, popular musical directress of the Strand Symphony Orchestra, must be complimented upon the musical score played by the musicians. Throughout the screening of the photoplay selections from the “Merry Widow” orchestral score are given.
