PENNY-IN-THE-SLOT BUSINESS INCREASES
NEW TELEPHONE BOXES EIGHTEEN OUTSIDE G.P.O. Eighteen new telephone boxes are to be erected outside th« General Post Office in Queen Street, A start was made to-day to remove the present wooden boxes, which will be temporarily placed in the two thoroughfares leading to the railway station until the new boxes are ready. Nine boxes will be place on either side of the main entrance to the post office. They will be attractively coated with copper and will resemble dark bronze when they have become weathered. The new boxes have been ordered to meet the convenience of the public. Every day the present boxes are almost constantly in use and people are forced to wait before they are able to ring up. At present there are 10 peimy-m----the-slot boxes outside the post office, and as this number is to be increased by eight, they should cope with th*J increased demand. The ne\v boxes are each to be a “nest" of nine, divided into separate compartments, each with its own door facing the Queen Street footpath This new design will make each loof nine boxes look uniform. The outside will be coated with copper. The framework will be of timber and the interior walls and ceilings will be covered with “celotex," which is a strong fibrous board which is sound-proof and cannot be written on and disfigured. To-day some of the old boxes ware removed, and by the end of this week a start will be made to instal the ne boxes, which are being done by contract.
