FOOT JAMMED IN RAIL
BOY KILLED BY TRAIN A dramatic story of how some children strove vainly to save the life of a five-year-old boy whose foot had become jammed in the rail at a level crossing was told at an inquest at Sidcup, London. The boy, Kenneth George Garland, of Bedford Road, Sidcup, was playing with his seven-year-old brother Frankand other children at the Half Way level crossing at Sidcup, when his foot became wedged between two rails. Then, according to the evidence given at the inquest, Frank and his small companions shouted for help and made desperate efforts to extricate Kenneth. They persisted in their efforts until they saw an electric tram from Sidcup to Charing Cross approaching. Then they all became “scared” and ran away. Kenneth was knocked down and killed. In evidence, the driver of the train said the boy, who seemed to be sitting or lying on the rails, put his hands up to his face as the train approached.
