THE GWILP

In the very long ago and far-away times, when the first brand-new animals began to roam about the Great Forest, they were most happy because there were so many new things to do. And they all enjoyed using their voices so much because they had never heard anything like it before. And just in the middle of all this excitement the Gwilp arrived, and he was queer—he was made up of bits and pieces. The giraffe twisted round his long neck and stared till the poor Gwilp blushed. “Who on earth are you?” asked the giraffe, most? surprised. “I—l think I’m a Gwilp,” said the poor Gwilp, shyly. “That is what they told me, anyhow.” , “Um—well, you’d better come and see the elephant. He will tell you where to live. He is our chosen king.” When the elephant saw the Gwilp, he was just as much astonished as the giraffe had been. “So you say you are a Gwilp,” said the elephant, quite bewildered, “but you look like nothing on earth; and what sort of noise do you make?” Then the Gwilp hung his head, for he knew that there had not been a single noise left for him to have, and he was most ashamed.

And because he was so sad, he went to live in the desert beyond the uttermost ends of the earth, and there he is to this day. It is very unfortunate, of course, for otherwise we might have been able to see him.
