MANY FALLS
CRASHES AT ELLERSLIE JOCKEY’S LEG PROKEN TO-DAY’S GALLOPS AND SCHOOLING A miserable morning greeted trainers at Ellerslie to-day, a bleak wind blowing with considerable force across the course and making the conditions the reverse of pleasanl;* There was some galloping on No. 1 grass track, one trestle out, but the jumping held most appeal to the spectators, a large number of whom braved the elements. The going was a bit better than on T uesday. An unfortunate mishap occurred during schooling operations, Salamander falling at the hurdle nearing the three-furlong post and throwing his rider, C. Healey, very heavily. The jockey was attended by Dr. McGregor Grant in the casualty room, and was found to have suffered a broken right leg above the knee. C. Carmont also fell during a run over the big fences, and crashed heavily, the rider being shaken and bruised. Fast Hurdling Tho hurdlers alone kept the crowd busy. Scot Free (T. Chaplin), Mount Marta (Jarvis) and "Vexatious were dispatched over four hurdles, commencing at the six furlong peg. The first-named led throughout, giving a fine display and finishing well clear of Mount Marta at the final fence. Vexatious fell at the third obstacle (the same spot at which Salamander fell a few minutes later), but her rider was unhurt. Vexatious was going well. The time was fair. Very fast time was registered by Arclieno (E. Garrett), who -was partnered by Aberfeldy (I. Tilson). The former had an advantage practically throughout, giving a brisk display of clean hurdling over the same four hurdles as the previous trio. She shows undoubted promise. Aberfeldy was hard put to it to keep with Archeno, but it was pleasing to see that the Southerner gave a, better showing than on Tuesday, although not by any means perfect. Archeno set a hot pace, the time registered being much faster than the other bouts timed. A Heavy Fall Once round over five hurdles (nine furlongs on the outside of the course proper) was the journey entered upon by Salamander (C. Healey) and Cullgie (McGregor). The former peaked at the first, and round the back Salamander, jumping nicely, went to the front, and running to the fourth fence (near the three furlongs) was over half a furlong in the lead. Here he crashed heavily, severely injuring Healey, who suffered a broken leg. When Cullgie came along he was almost down, too, but he kept his feet and finished the schooling alone. There was little pace on throughout. Peneus and Red Fuchsia The Hastings candidates, Red Fuchsia (Baker) and Peneus (A. McDonald) were paired in a round of the hurdles. The latter blundered at the first, and both pulling hard they kept almost together all the way, Peneus rising at the last a little in the van with Marble Mount, who joined in at tlie seven furlongs and jumped well over the last four hurdles. There is little doubt that both Peneus and Red Fuchsia are very forward for their engagements here. They encompassed the full round in 2.17 2-5, and ran the six furlongs from the winning post to u the three in 1.32 2-5, good time, but not comparable -with Archibald’s on Tuesday. Nevertheless, l’or their first effort at Ellerslie, they performed with plenty of confidence. Mister Gamp’s Effort Mister Gamp (A. McDonald) was sent over four hurdles alone, and gave a faultless exhibition, but there was not a great deal of pace on during the journey. Odin (Mephan) finished in front of Star of the East (H. Dulieu) at the last of four hurdles, Pompeius having tipped out at the last fence when just behind them. It was a fair effort on the part of Odin. Llewellyn (I. Tilson) showed some of his old dash "when sent over four hurdles in company with Prince Papa (T. Chaplin) and Kauri Park (H. Dulieu). The first two had too much pace for Kauri Park, who tailed off in the concluding stages, the other pair coming at the last obstacle together. The time was fairly good. Over Country The first our when the hill was opened was a field of eight, comprised of Tuki (Tilson), Maunga (Griffith). Glendowie (Henderson), Geyserland (A. .McDonald), Perle de Leon (A. G. Campbell), Comical (Mr. R. Russell), Mashoor (Regan) and Importer (Sharkey). The start was a straggling one, Tuki going to the front and leading over the sod wall, water-jump and stone wall from Geyserland and Comical (who jumped the double instead of the water), Importer, Mashoor, Perle de Leon, Maunga and Glendowie. Up the hill and over it, Tuki, Geyserland and Comical were well clear of Mashoor and Importer with another gap back to the other three, who were in line. This was the order coming to the double and the last fence, the stone wall, Comical finishing very strongly a good four lengths in front of Importer and Tuki (who made a blunder at the last fence), with Mashoor, Geyserland, Maunga, Glendowie and Perle de Leon following in that order, not a great deal separ-
ating the last three from those immediately in front of them. It; was am interesting bit of schooling, and the watch showed that the pace was on for most of the way. Comical gave a refreshing display, and the others all did well. Brigadier Bill (Alan McDonald) and Ruby Ring (Alister McDonald) were started from the sod wall, which they negotiated well, but the water-jump had them both guessing, and they hesitated before clearing it sluggishly. At the stone wall they were both slow, and at the old water-jump Brigadier Bill fenced well, but Ruby Ring refused and repeated this performance again. Brigadier Bill was then brought back and acted as schoolmaster to his stablemate, but Ruby Ring declined to follow a good lead. The pair then galloped seven furlongs on tlie flat, hitting out with rare freedom. End of the Jumping Clockwork (R. Olive), Marita (S. Henderson), Betty Zane (H. Dulieu), Master Noel (J. Sharkey) and Rafferty (C. Carmont) took on the full steeplechase course, but after successfully jumping the sod wall and double Rafferty came to grief at the stone wall, his rider, who was thrown heavily, receiving a nasty shaking. Clockwork was in charge at the old water-jump and maintained that position throughout, although Marita, who gave a nice display, was within easy reach of him at the end. Those two were the only ones to finish, for at the first fence on top of the hill Master Noel and Betty Zane refused, subsequently jumping this obstacle and finishing the course together. On the Flat Royal Tea again proved too good for Thursby when the pair were partnered over five furlongs on number one grass (the scene of all gallops) the former finishing three-quarters of a length in front of his companion and going very easily at that. Royal Tea covered the distance in 1.7 3-5, while the last halfmile took 53 1-5. Archibald moved off slowly from the seven-furlong peg and did the full journey in 1.45 2-5, without being bustled at any stage of the gallop. Parfit Amour was sent over seven furlongs in 1.44 1-5, and after getting over the first furlong in 13 and two in 26, he was allowed to slow down, having no pretentions of recording good time over the last three furlongs. Segment and Kelso were to have been companions over half a mile, but the former jumped off several lengths in front of his companion, and came ovei the last three furlongs in 41 1-5. Cornwall Candidate The task allotted Corinax (J. Cammick) was a round, and after being assisted over the first five furlongs by Piet, he was brought home by The Thorn. Corinax had the measure of his companion at the finish, and registered an attractive effort, the time for the round being 1.57 3-5, and for tlie last half-mile 55 1-5. King Emerald, who was picked up by Eager Rose at the six-fui'long post covered a mile in 1.4S —a good gallop. King Emerald was doing is well at the finish, and appears to be a possibility during the coming meeting. Storm Fiend travelled over seven furlongs in 1.37 3-5, the first two furlongs in 27 4-5, and three in 42 4-5. Lomint Improving Princess Ronnie (H. Wiggins) and Lomint (S. Henderson) were partnered in a bout over a round, and were not unduly bustled to finish on terms in 1.58 3-5. The pair were timed to step over the last mile in 1.50, and the fractional times from there were: First two furlongs, 27 2-5; three in 40 1-5; halfmile in 56 1-5, and five furlongs in 1.11. Lomint still appears to be on the robust side, but she is improving. Sir Archie was not asked to extend himself from the seven furlongs post, but when approaching the three furlongs the pace was increased, and he came home over the last three in 40 1-5. Bulolo easily accounted for Sir Mond over half a mile in 51 4-5, and although there was little between them at tlie finish, Bulolo was going very easily. From a time point of view Ballymoy II and Hyde Park registered the best performances during the morning in getting to the end of half a mile in 50 2-5. Ballymoy 11., who had the advantage in weight, pleased most, but Hyde Park must also be given credit for a good effort. Ready for the Fray After they had schooled over half a dozen steeplechase fences on the flat, Brigadier Bill and Ruby Ring were galloped seven furlongs on number one grass. Hitting out nicely, they got to the end of the first half-mile in 57 1-5, and the seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5. This -was a smart burst of speed, for both horses carried big weights. It showed Mr. Bull’s horses to be very fit. Beau Cavalier, with a good weight in the saddle, travelled over a round, the last mile taking 1.52. Timed over the last mile the Chesterfield gelding strode over the first couple of furlongs in 28 4-5, three in 43, and half a mile in 58 3-5. Beau Cavalier was going strongly at the end, and will lack nothing in condition when due to race next Saturday. Master Doon, Dave and Nucleus were to have been associated over six furlongs, but the last-named broke away before reaching the peg, and came home over the last half-mile in 56 3-5. Master Doon and Dave, with very little between them at the end, recorded 1.20 for the six furlongs, the last five taking 1.7. Cynthia jST. was given an essay over a round, taking 1.37 2-5, fo.r the last seven furlongs. Arch Queen and Harbour View moved pleasingly over half a mile, taking 51 3-5, while Vexatious got to the end of six furlongs in 1.26, after having schooled over hurdles. Blue Spear, Killute and Royal Trek finished in the order named at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.23 1-5, the initial furlong taking 12 2-5 and the two 27. Tidal and a companion moved smartly over half a mile in 51 4-5, and were doing it well, while Sulla registered 53 4-5 for a similar distance. Wee Marble had an advantage of at least three lengths over Kamehameha at the end of a task extending to a round in 2.2 1-5. Wee Marble has never looked so well as he does at present. Good Boy was allowed to stride along over six furlongs, the last five taking 1.8 2-5.
