CLAIMS OF PORTS

WHANGAREI AND OPUA COALING FACILITIES DISCUSSED (From Our Own Correspondent) KAITAIA, Thursday. The rival claims of Opua and Whangarei to be established as coaling ports were the subject of a conference between the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Colonel Allen Bell, M.P., and Mr. E. C. Casey, Divisional Superintendent of Railways at Auckland. Mr. Coates said it w'ould not be the policy of his department to pit one port against the other by according either one preferential treatment. Each must stand on its own merits.

The request made by the Whangarei Harbour Board, continued Mr. Coates, would necessitate the construction of 100 to 123 new Q hopper wagons at a cost of from £25,000 to £30,000 to handle a prospective coal traffic of 25,000 to 30.000 tons per annum.
