FRENCH WAR ORPHAN DIES IN MELBOURNE
DIGGERS’ MASCOT SMUGGLED TO AUSTRALIA (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.25 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. Henri Hermene To veil, French war orphan and Diggers’ mascot, died as the result of a collision between nis motor-cycle and a taxi-cab in Spring Street. To veil’s father was killed in Flanders in 1915, and his mother was killed by German raiders, leaving Henri an orphan. He was rescued from the ruins and became the mascot of the Fourth Squadron of the A.F.C. He wandered from one unit to another on the battlefield, and was wounded on two occasions. When the armistice was signed he was cleverly smuggled aboard a troopvessel to Australia in a sack containing loaves of bread.
