“OVER THE ODDS”
WOMEN POACH OYSTERS 36 DOZEN GATHERED To 36 dozen oysters—£ls. That item would scarcely be considered domestic economy; but three women paid the price to-day. The women, Vivienne Anderson, Jane McKinnon and Fanny Powley, were charged at the Police Court to-day with taking oysters at Waiheke during the close season. Mrs. Powley pleaded guilty, but the others denied guilt. A fisheries inspector said he had gone into one of the bays at Waiheke, and saw four women on the oyster rocks. As soon as they sa w him, two made off down the beach, and the other two climbed a bank. He pursued the two over the bank, because they were carrying a sack, but when he caught them, the sack had disappeared. Later, a boy showed him where the women had dropped the oysters, and he found 36 dozen in a can. The boy, in evidence, said he had seen the four women picking the oysters. The defence was that Mrs. Powley alone had picked the oysters. “I believe the boy,’* said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. “It’s going well over the odds when they take a lot like that.”
The three defendants were each fined £5, but no summons has yet been served on the fourth offender.
