AT CAMBRIDGE Miss Elsa Lang, of Adelaide, was recently selected from about a dozen applicants for a position on the staff of women tutors at Cambridge University. Although still in her early twenties she has specialised in the classics and archaeology, upon which subjects she has published some valuable papers. ASSOCIATE BACTERIOLOGIST Miss Alice Evans, associate bacteriologist of the Uited States Hygienic Laboratories in Washington, has been elected president of the Society of American Bacteriologists. She has made important contributions to medical science. especially in connection with the study of Malta fever, and is said to have been the first person to discover that disease may be transmitted from cattle to human beings. MATTERS MILITARY Hitherto, candidates for commissions in the British Army have been coached by men, but there are now several women tutors in London who are preparing candidates for examinations. In a recent examination for entrance to Sandhurst Military College, two of the successful candidates had been coached by Miss Ethel Buchanan, who is specialising in this work. ALOFT Miss Winifred Spooner, the only woman competitor to enter, recently won the 20-mile race arranged by the Suffolk Aero Club. She piloted a Moth machine and this was her initial experience in airplane racing.
