The officers who were on the Iron at the time of the wreck are Mr W. A. Peter, chief officer of the Iron Monarch, Mr. J. Wakeham, the second engineer, and Mr. H. Strauss, the chief steward. The wreck occurred at 5.43 p.m., said one of the men this morning, and during the night an oil tanker the Saxicava, stood by. On the Tuesday the Doepel, a small salvage steamer ' arrived at the wreck and put salvage gear on board.. After a week the ' weather got worse and on the Satur-* day the ship broke her back If the weather had held fine for three days more the ship could have been saved. The launch employed by the salvage company afforded the only chance of getting the crew off the Iron Chief, but the risk was taken and all the men were taken off safely. The salvage company lost £4,000 worth of gear owing to the ship breaking up.
