He said his party was tired, dirty and hungry, but otherwise fit. They encountered strong head winds from Port Etienne, French West Africa, 670 miles south of the Canary Island, where they spent Monday night at a local fort behind barbed wire fences, as a protection against marauding tribesmen. m
