ROADING IN MANUKAU
INCREASED ACTIVITIES FINANCIAL POSITION Considerable loading progress will be made in the Manukau County this year, according to Mr. F. M. Waters, the chairman, who presided at the annual meeting of the County Council yesterday. Extra financial assistance from the Main Highways Board was mentioned by Mr. Waters as being of great assistance and the tyre and petrol taxes would also result in more funds being available. Tallies taken recently on the Great South Road at Wiri showed a daily average of 1,000 vehicles, which on Sunday were increased to over 3,000. Increased motor traffic was influencing all local bodies and the position called for co-ordination, particularly in regard to town-planning, licensing, traffic control, water supply and transport. The financial statement for the year ended March 31 last indicated that £86,116 was expended. The outlay was made up of £448,807 from general and separate accounts, £36,316 from loans, and £993 in grants. The cost of administration was 5.34 per cent, of the total expenditure. Roads under the county administration totalled 338 miles, of which 186 miles were metalled. Building permits issued during the year totalled 224 and the cost involved was £87,640. Credit balances were shown for each of the six ridings.
