RAILWAY DEVIATION
GOOD PROGRESS NEAR PALMERSTON (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. The excavation work for the railway deviation at Milson is progressing rapidly. Four steam shovels are being used, each of which takes three-quarters of a cubic yard of earth at a single movement. Already 120,000 cubic yards of earth have been removed and carried to a spot between Rongotea and Cloverlea Roads, where the spoil is being dumped. Piers for the overhead bridge across the road at Milson are practicqrtly complete, the false decking has been laid and the steel joists are almost ready to be hauled into place. Except for one gap, about 60 chains of rails, have been laid to Longburn, where the deviation will ultimately join the main line. Several culverts have been completed, and a bridge near Cloverlea Road has been erected. At present about 204 men are engaged on the job, an increase of about 80 since the beginning of the year.
