G.N. Hurdles Field Shaping Itself

SOME CERTAIN STARTERS PROBABLY SIXTEEN RUNNERS It is now possible to arrive at a fair idea of the horses that will start in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday week, although of course any statement in this connection at the present time is subject to later developments. Apparently Mr. James Bull may be content to start Brigadier Bill in the Steeplechase only, foregoing his G.N. Hurdles engagement, this opinion being arrived at through the fact that Alan McDonald has been engaged to ride Mister Gamp in the latter race. Of course it is possible that Brigadier Bill may run in both the big jumping events for it can be said that he would rank as one of the probable winners of the two Northerns. STABLE CANDIDATES Gaze can apparently be ruled out in favour of his stable mate, Perle de Leon, while Frank Loomb may elect

to run either Mia Bella or Mangani, or both, but then he also has the maiden jumper Desert Glow, who has yet to race over hurdles. Then there are Mr. John Patterson’s three, Zircon, Royal Form and Ural la. The last-named is the most seasoned, blit all three claim also the dual engagement. The big Hurdles would be a good race to sharpen them up for the Steeplechase. For this reason also Wiltshire may be given a run. CERTAIN STARTERS Those that can be regarded as almost certain starters are Wedding March, Archibald, Perle de Leon, Pouri, Aberfeldy, Beau Cavalier, Maunga, Mister Gamp, Rahepoto and Karamu, while others that are probable starters are Comical, Brigadier Bill, Wenday and Glenotus, with the stable elect of Mr. Patterson’s three and Loomb’s three. In all there will probably be about 16 runners on the day. Something more definite may be expected after the taking of acceptances on Friday next. THE RIDERS A. G. Campbell, the ex-South Island horseman, will be Perle de Leon’s rider in the big hurdles, and also in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Campbell rode this horse in both his engagements at Wanganui month. Present indications point to Glendowie running in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and will be ridden by S. Henderson. J. Mcßae is being spoken of as the rider of Beau Cavalier in the Great Northern Steeplechase, but this horse is to be ridden in the Great Northern Hurdles by S. Henderson.
