WITH THE BOY SCOUTS
Last Saturday 16 Scouts of the Papakura troop, under Scoutmaster Andrew Slessor and Assistant-Scout-master C. Kernot, paid a visit to the Sun Office, inspected the building and watched the paper going to press. The boys spent a happy time exploring the different departments, and the afternoon quickly slipped by. This troop, which was formed two years ago, is now 30 strong, and the keenness of the boys reflects great credit on Scoutmaster Slessor and his second in command. Since last Christmas six First Class badges have been awarded and a number of boys have passed the Proficiency and Second Class tests. The troop is now concentrating on fire drill and ambulance work. * * * Smoke Signal, our scribe in the Herne Bay troop, writes: “After thoroughly enjoying themselves at the annual Easter camp the boys have settled down to their usual steady work of competing against each other in inter-patrol competition, the winning patrol holding the Alex English Memorial Cup for three months. “Although only a few of the boys entered for the First Class examinations held at Western Springs on May 5, we hope to do better next time, as we are now preparing to have some really good First Class Scouts in the Troop.’ Big "Wolf, of the Edendale Troop, reports as follows: “On Sunday, April 22, the troop held a Church Parade in the Edendale Presbyterian Church, the Kakamai Girl Guides and the Edendale Cubs also attending. The- New Testament lesson was read by E. Carpenter (scribe) and later our chaplain, the Rev. W. Gilmour, 8.A., spoke to us about his Scouting experiences in Canada. “On Anzac Day we attended the combined Church Parade in the Town Hall, and on the following Saturday met at troop headquarters for a games afternoon, which concluded with tea. Second H. May made and presented a large iced cake, which was much appreciated by the boys. Later in the evening we held a practice for the sing-song which the troop gave on May 10 at the studio of Station IYA. “As the First Class tests we were well represented, but did not do as well as we expected. Several boys, however, passed the test for the Cook’s badge, thus making another step toward their All-Round cords. “In the matter of sport we are holding our own, for last Saturday, we played a Soccer match against the Shackleton Troop, the result being a win for Edendale by 6 goals to 2. Swift Eagle, of the Gordon Troop, reports: “Last Friday night the Gordon Troop held tli© usual parade at St. Peter’s Schoolroom, Grey Lynn. The Bulldog Patrol received instruction in signalling, the Eagle Patrol in map-draw-ing, and the Kiwi in ambulance work. After work the whole troop practised the Dominion haka with the scoutmaster as leader. “Seven members of the troop are attending St. John Ambulance classes as first-aid cadets.” Strongbow. of the Devonport Troop, •writes: “Several Fridays ago the boys of tWo Devonport Troop had a pleasant sui prise. We were presented first of
i all -with a cup, kindly given by Mr. Pascoe for competition among the boys. Secondly, Dr. Bennett presented us with a splendid Rugby football and. thirdly, we were given the old observation post on top of Mount Victoria. “We have formed a Rugby football team and would be pleased to meet other scout teams. “Just now r we are busy preparing for an annual display of scout work to be held at the Methodist Sunday School Hall on Friday. “We intend moving into our new headquarters as soon as possible, but, just now*, are working as hard as possible to make them fit for occupation.”
