“THE STUDENT PRINCE”
AT HIS MAJESTY’S TO-NIGHT To-night at 7.50 o’clock the J. C. Williamson Royal Comic Opera Company inaugurates a season at His Majesty’s Theatre, presenting for the first time in the Dominion the romantic comic opera, “The Student Prince.” The event is a most important one in the history of the firm, as it is easily the most colossal fljshow that has yet been seen in this country. The complete show, principals, chorus and orchestra, that created such a furore for over twenty weejts in Melbourne, appears here. The company of 90 people with over one hundred tons of scenery, arrived by the Marama yesterday and last night a complete scenic and music rehearsal was held, when everything went perfectly. “The Student Prince” is a musical adaptation of the romantic drama, “Old Heidelberg.” It is a romantic love story set to exquisite music and said to have a potent appeal for all lovers of mass singing or concert music, or both. The early scenes of the play are laid in the University of Heidelberg, and are characterised by mass gatherings by the students and some fine choruses. The solos and duets of the principal characters stand out against the high tonal background of college songs and the voices of the maids of the inn. “The Student Prince” introduces Beppie de Vries, a delightful leading lady from Holland, whoso beauty, brilliant singing, charming personality and fine acting have completely captivated all theatregoers. James Liddy, the leading man, has a fine voice and great presence. Important people with the show are Frank Webster and Hedley Hall. An old favourite, Arthur Stigant, is sure of a hearty welcome, as are Adele Crane, Vera Spaull and Herbert Broune. The box plans are at Lewis Eady, Ltd., and the day sales at the theatre sweet store.
