WINDFALL APPLES

“A SUICIDAL POLICY” GROWERS EXPRESS CONCERN The statement that about 20,003 cases of windfall Delicious apples had been marketed in and about Auckland this season, and that that accounted for the fall of this class of apple from popular favour, was made at the conference of the Auckland Provincial Fruitgrowers Council yesterday. A PROMINENT grower asserted that orchardists were cutting their own throats in sending windfall Delicious apples to the market.- They were excellent in maturity, but the windfalls were nearly all rotten at the core when cut open. Owing to the windfalls marketed it was now questionable whether first grade Delicious out of cool storage were going to recover this year. If there was not legislation to prevent the marketing of windfall fruit, there should be. They were fine for pigfood. It was suggested that growers near Auckland should combine in their own interests to stop windfall marketing. One grower said that only that morning windfall Delicious had been selling from 2s to 4s and ss, while lovely Spys in perfect condition were not realising prices which could be compared. Delicious were grown in this country more than any other variety. If the trouble continued, a member considered, it would extend to the export trade, as if the decline of Delicious caused no demand for Argentine Delicious, the latter would be withheld and react on the market. Mr. Ballantyne: Here is the lever to force compulsory standardisation of fruit. Everyone knows that ninetenths of windfall Delicious are rotten at the core, though they look of the best quality.
