SANDERS CUP CONTEST
NEW PROPOSAL VETOED Proposals for placing Sanders Cup contests on a new and more satisfactory basis recently framed by Mr. J. Hislop, of Auckland, donor of the cup. were discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association last evening. After delegates had examined the suggestions it was unanimously agreed that they were not practicable. The proposal was to have six new boats, all to be built by one builder and of the same type as the present boats, and to confine the contest only to these boats. The cost would be defrayed by public subscription or by the clubs in each centre, and when completed the boats would be balloted for and named after the province to which they were allotted. It was hoped in this way to make the contest more a trial of seamanship than at present and to eliminate disputes about measurements, j The chairman, Mi’. J. B. Johnston, said that if the proposals were carried out the class would be killed altogether. All existing boats would be thereby ruled out. No interest would be shown in the trials. After further discussion the following resolution was carried unanimously. Copies will be forwarded to the various centres interested. “That the adoption of the suggestion would prejudice the class inasmuch as it would discourage the building of boats, the incentive of the chance of selection as a representative being absent. That it would exclude all existing boats and would thus be unfair to those which in all respects had fully complied with the plans and specifications. That all boa's should be measured by Dominion measurers appointed by the conference and any boat which does not comply with the plans and specifications should be disqualified from taking part. That i’ is desirable a minimum weight for boat should be adopted.'*
