WELLINGTON CLUB

IMPROVEMENTS PLAN The announcement that the Wellington Trotting Club has secured a further 21 years extension of its lease at Hutt Park has been received with general satisfaction by trotting enthusiasts (comments a Wellington writer) who are now looking forward to an early statement of the club’s intentions in the matter of the remodelling of the course and motor paddock, and th e replacement of the present inadequate stand accommodation. The increased patronage which the club lias enjoyed of late clearly demonstrates the growing popularity of the light-harness sport in the capital city of the Dominion, and provided that the club adopts a progressive policy and studies the comfort of the general public there is no reason why trotting should not become as popular here as it is in Christchurch and Auckland.

Xo doubt there will be those wbr> will argue that the club cannot alien: to do anything which might be termec ’ comprehensive,” as it is only alloww! lour days’ racing, but a close analyst of the position will show that they ar on untenable ground. The whole «f the present stand accommodation ma* go, and the motor park must be remodelled, even if only the urgent needof the present day are to be met bt: in developing its scheme the club mns: have regard to future requirements. -Addington may be accepted as guide of what is likely to be require ultimately, for I am convinced tot: provided their comfort and conveniec ar e studied, the people of the Weffincton Province will extend to the trottir: sport as great a patronage as is no-' enjoyed in the southern centre and ! Auckland. By providing adequate a»commodation, the club will secure tb patronage that will entitle it to demar. a greater number of racing days. Hal! measures will not suffice, and if Attempted will assuredly stifle the growing popularity of the sport ttr the club has been so successfully developing by the progressive policy i' has hitherto followed.
