Girl Attacked by Man in the Dark
MORNINGSIDE AFFRAY FOUR-INCH WOUND INFLICTED When returning home from work at about 5.45 last evening, Miss Alice Morphy, of 24 Challinor Crescent, Morningside, Mount Albert, was attacked by a man, who inflicted a four-inch wound on the back of the girl's head. Miss Morphy had come across the paddocks at the end of Challinor Street, when the man, who had concealed "himself behind a shed adjacent to the house bordering the track where it merged with the street, jumped forth and struck her with some implement. The girl, upon recovering from the first shock of the savage attack, ran for her home across the road, and at the same time her assailant disappeared down the track she had just traversed. * . The girl is confined to her bad today. She says that the man fired what felt like a stone at her at close range,. Had she not been a big, strong girl she would probably have been rendered unconscious by the blow. The doctor who attended Miss" Morphy last evening expects that she will be able to return to work to-morrow. Mrs. Morphy, who has three daughters, one going to school and the other two to work, communicated with the police and a detective is investigating the matter. Mrs. Morphy’s eldest daughter was scared presumably by the same man just before she reached her gate as she was returning home on Sunday evening last. Two other neighbours in that locality report that several times lately women have been frightened by a man who approached them in the dark. It is assumed that the cause of all the trouble is some weak-minded individual who is not altogether responsible for his actions. The police are taking measures to rid the district of the nuisance.
