Herne Bay Wants Direct Traffic Route
PETITION BEING PREPARED HARBOUR ST. EXTENSION Herne Bay residents and ali those living on the slopes to the harbour in that area, and who have to climb College Hill and go through Three Lamps to their homes, are setting out to secure more direct means of communication with the city. The first step will be a petition to the City Council, and this is now being prepared. The petitioners will advocate the extension of Harbour Street, which would give an almost straight run on a much better grade than the present one. The proposal involves the construction of about I,oooft of roading, the excavation necessary amounting to approximately 30,000 yards. About a third of the spoil could be disposed of on the spot. The total cost of the proposal w'ould be £11,500, but there might be additional costs which would involve a large sum for excavations. Any proposal to forward the scheme will be strongly opposed by the Auckland Gas Company, who require all the land they have and more to relieve their growing congestion. The roadway would go across their property.
