IN THE MARKET PLACE
MORE VEGETABLES EGG PRICES STEADY Steady trading is reported in most sections of the City Markets. The quality of the green vegetables coming forward has shown considerable improvement over the past week or so. Good dessert apples and pears meet with a steady demand, with prices tending to harden. Hothouse grapes meet with only a very mediocre demand. The market for bananas has firmed up, following last week’s low rates, and the tendency should be upward until the next shipment, which is not expected for over a fortnight. The demand for tomatoes is only fair. Heavier supplies of green vegetables are being sent in from local gardens, and fresher offerings result, with considerable improvement also registered in the quality. With a gradual trend toward easier prices, less inducement will be offered Wellington and Wairarapa growers to rail consignments North. Both cabbages and cauliflowers are heavily supplied. The market for eggs is steady at last week’s closing rates.
