DATES AGAIN
THAMES DISSATISFIED JANUARY APPLIED FOR (Special to THE SUN) THAMES, Saturday. The Thames Jockey Club, which has raced at Thames since 1868, is disappointed with the decision of the Auckland District Racing Committee in allotting November 17 and 19 as its 1928 racing dates, which are also the days allotted the Otahuhu Trotting Club. The matter was considered at a special meeting of the general committee last evening when it was explained that the club in the matter of dates had been particularly unfortunate. Since 1918 the club had raced on various dates between the months of February and October. The club is keenly desirous of regaining its old dates of November 24 and 26, but the Te Kuiti Club has been allotted these days for this season, the Thames Club being allotted November 17 and 19. It was pointed out last evening that “no club with a course within a 100 miles radius of Auckland would dare to race against the Otahuhu Trotting Club.” The Thames Club was one of the oldest in New Zealand, and considered it was being unfairly treated in being compelled to give way to the Te Kuiti Club and race on an impossible date in order to benefits the Te Kuiti Club.” It was also stated last evening that an appeal for reconsideration of the dates had resulted in an offer of November 3 and 5, or January 12 and 14. The November date was considered too close to the Whangarei Club’s races and it was resolved to apply for January 12 and 14, 1929, as the club’s next racing dates, the Auckland committee to be informed that he club in no way waived its claim to race on November 24 or 26 (to the nearest Saturday) in future years.
