ART OF THE CAMERA
FOREIGN PHOTOGRAPHY The exhibition of foreign photography, which was opened at noon by the Camera Club, it probably the finest collection of original work ever shown in Auckland. The photographs, hung in the gallery of the Schmidt Studios, include work by the modern Russians, Norwegians, Finns, Americans, Japanese, and British. Although. Australians are represented in the show, there is no New Zealand work :.n it. All the pictures have appeared in the “Photogram,” the management of which is sponsoring the exhibition through the British Dominions. These Pictures represent the supreme art of the camera. A nude, for instance, by F. Drikol, of Prague, is more like a charcoal impreasion than a photograph. It is a Joyous work, pure, free, and living. Bachannal,” by Dr. Hay, of New South Wales, and a study of Eve Gray, the actress, are among the Australian "fferings. One of the gems of the show is “La Oracion,” a Spanish impression by Fchague. a reproduction of which appears in The Sun. Who could S' j e beauty in a collection °f pot lids? No one except the busy housewife who takes a pride in polishes them. Yet Margaret Watkins, with the eye of the true artist, has converted them into an exceedingly clever study. . “Orgy,” by Waldemar Side, a Norwegian artist, and a study by N. Yarov°ff. of Moscow, breathe the very spirit of the dance. "Frogs in the Pool” is something decidedly unusual, yet attractive in its simplicity, from the camera of M. X. Iwashitu, a Japanese. “Portrait of Miss B.” is a curiousi East and West. J. Togosa* V| ere, presumably a Japanese living in the United States, has treated the pose °f his sitter, an American woman, with the quiet dignity of his own artist race ty introducing a willow branch. It is Singularly effective in the corner of the Picture. All interested in art should not fail t 0 see the exhibition. The photograph* will remain on view, with the ► ,e rmission °* Mr. Schmidt, until Saturday.
