Cambridge R.C. is Resuscitated
QUESTION OF PERMIT {From Our Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, To-day. A new racing club has been formed at Cambridge. In J.SBI the old Cambridge Jockey Club was formed, and. raced successfully in this district until about 3 910, when it got into difficulties. The grandstand, now at Claudelands, was sold, and in 1914 the club amalgamated with the Waikato Hunt Club, which lias since carried on the annual fixtures. At a meeting held here last evening it was decided to resuscitate the club, to be known as the Cambridge RacingClub. Some doubt was expressed that the club would ever be able to get a totalisator permit. Mr. Wynn Brown thought the formation of the club a good thing, but lie could not see how they were going to satisfy the racing authorities because of the restriction prohibiting totalisator permits for non-totalisator clubs within 20 miles of a club possessing a permit. At present he thought it would be asking too much to seek another permit for Cambridge when other racing clubs were only just existing. It was pointed out by Mr. M. Wells that in other parts of the Dominion clubs in proximity to one another had permits. In the South Island certain clubs had gone out of existence and lie did not see why, with a good course and facilities. Cambridge should not get another day’s racing. About 20 members were elected and arrangements were made to take a long lease of the local racecourse. The following officers were elected: President. Mr. M. Wells; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. N. Banks and R. Hannon: secretary and treasurer. Mr. W. Stopford: committee. Messrs. J. W. Garland. W. Moore, Alan Bell and H. Crowtlier.
