WAITEMATA’S RATES
£123,832 SPENT ON WORKS COUNCIL’S ANNUAL REPORT General rates in 10 of the 11 ridings of the Waitemata County are unchanged for the year 1928-29. the only increase being from lid to 2d in the Waipareira riding. The ridings’ outlay is estimated at £32,756 for the ensuing year. The allocation of the riding expenditure is as follows: Wainui riding, £2,420: Takapuna, £3,876: Titirangi, £2,390: Birkenhead, £2,696; Kaukapakapa, £2 038 Kumeu, £2,960 : Mairetahi, £2,J1... Waitakere, £3.411; Waikumete. £3,211; Pukeatua. £2,752; Waipareira. £3,587. . . . Over £123,832 was expended in works and administration ir tl c county during the year ended Marc h 31, according to the annual report submitted to a meeting of the council yesterday. Administration costs accounted ior 5.68 per cent, of the total expenditure, the amount being £7,011 The outlay consist'd of £70,752 l's M revenue, £34,161 3s 2d from loans, and £18,918 17s lid from grant accounts, the aggregate of £22,51S I4s 2d collected from the latter being a recordThe grant contributions received were: Public Works Road Furd. £6 229 10s 2d: flood damage grants £ 2,128 19s lid: Consolidated Fund. £1,198 3s 6d; highway mcintenancr subsidies, £6,454 13s 2d: construction subsidies, £6,507 7s sd. In a review of the engineering workit was pointed out that within its area of 640 square miles the county had 647 miles of road. This was made up of 1111 miles of metalled mam highway, 241- miles of x. a.ne tailed highway, 195:* miles of other metallei road other than main highway. There wore 172 bridges of over 20ft. «pan in the county. During the yeai 35.3 mile** of new metalling had been completed and 19.7 miles of new road formed Twenty bridges of a total length ol 740 ft. had been replaced in permanent material. Two important road works completed were the all-weather road to H» lensville, by metalling Lincoln Road, and
