BEST BRITISH BEET CROP
FARMER’S EXCELLENT YIELD A Worcestershire grower of sugar beet, Mr. H. H. Harris, has won the Mason Challenge Cup of the British Sugar Beet Society for the best crop of sugar beet in the past season. He grew nearly six and a-quarter acres of beet, yielding 96 tons scwt 141 b of beets, having a sugar content of 18.7 per cent. This result is described as “really remarkable” in what was generally a most unfavourable season. There were 67 entrants. Mr. Harris valued his beet acre for their feeding value to his stock. The success was announced at the society’s annual meeting on March 23. Lord Ernie, who presided at the ensuing luncheon, urged farmers to grow sugar beet. He said: “In this country the average yield per acre is about eight tons. In Germany it is 12 to 13 tons. If we can make sugar beet pay at a yield of eight tons an acre, then there is a very large margin for future success. What the crop has to offer the farmer is a sure market and an ascertained price in cash. Where else can you find that? Therefore, I say, don’t let a temporary depression deter you from going oil with the experiment."
