Famous Comedian Was Given Five Dollars For Small “Bit. ” CHAPLIN AS AN EXTRA! Charles Chaplin teas recently offered five dollars for taking a small part, according to a Hollymood correspondent, and what is more, he accepted it! ■ Chaplin did the “bit” in Norma Talmadge's film that netted him the extra’s customary five-dollar cheque, and no more. i Henry King, who is directing Norma ! Talmadge and her leading man, Gilbert Roland, in "A Woman Disputed,” was busy looking over a number of I available extras on the set to get a ! small man in an overcoat. The small man was to hide in a doorway and ' leer at Norma as she passed down the street. Nobody available was to be j found. Chaplin, who seems unable to keep away from bis friends who are working, if he is not busy with his own affairs before the camera, was sitting around. King went over to him and jsaid: j “Charlie, you’d do perfectly. Why | won’t you do it?” \ “1 will for five dollars,” came the
answer with a grin. Charlie wrapped an overcoat collar high about his neck and with averted face concealed himself in the doorway. Just as Norma passed him, with the cameras grinding. Charlie leered forth at her. It was a shock that registered amazement as well as the prescribed iorror on Norma’s face. Site kept on »oing, however, and they all had a laugh at the end of the scene. King was later signing the extra’s cheques, and when it came to Charlie's. King said to Norma: “Should I make it 7.50 dollars. He played a ’bit’ and has it coming.’’ “Didn't he say he’d do it for five dollars?” said Norma. “Make the cheque five dollars.” Charlie took it, too.
