MERE RAIHA PERENIKI

FAMOUS OLD CHIEFTAINESS The death occurred to-day of Mere Raiha Perenlki, at Puru. Thames, at one time chieftainess of the Isgatimaru tribe. She was highly respected by Maori and pakeha alike, and was an authority on tribal lore and native women’s customs. She was a prominent figure in the days of the mining boom, when she wielded her great influence in favour of the diggers when there were native objections to prospectors traversing Maori lands. She leaves a son, Hare Pereniki, a prominent Ngatimaru rangitira, and a daughter, Haora Taiarangui. She was about 72 years old.
