NEW LYNN THEATRE CLOSED FOR SAFETY
BIG CRACKS IN WALL SEWER TUNNEL COLLAPSES The Delta Theatre at New Lynn, in the walls of which cracks have appeared as the result of the collapse of part of a sewage tunnel, ; has been closed for safety. It is hoped to reopen the theatre within 10 days. Preparations are being: made for j piling to provide a permanent solution j to the trouble. Commenting on the occurrence, Mr. W. A. Gray, of Messrs. Gulliver and Gray, drainage engineers to the New Lynn Town. Board, informed a Sun representative that two cracks, one j near the middle of the building and the other nearer the front, were i noticed in the theatre wall on Sun- j day, and the discovery reported to i the contractors. The work of shor- ! ing up the wall, which is 132 ft long, | 30ft high and weighs about 200 tons, was put in hand immediately. It is anticipated that in ten days the work of ensuring the stability of the budding will be complete. The tunnel collapsed near the rear of the theatre, but whether the cavein extends far is not known. No attempt to clear the tunnel, in which the actual damage is not ascertainable at present, will be made until the safety of the theatre has been ensured. The sewer is one being constructed j under contract for the New Lynn ; Town Board by Messrs. W. Stevenson j and Sons as part of the major drainage scheme to serve Henderson, Wai- ; kumete and New Lynn. It is designed | with a height of five feet and width of 3ft 6in, tho contract price being j £ S, S SB. ______________
