Shore Boxing Championships

RECORD ENTRY LIST NAVY MEN IN TRAINING When the Takapuna Boating Club decided to stage a boxing and Wrestling tournament in aid of the club’s funds, those in charge expected the events would take up one evening only. Now that all the entries have come, however, it has been found impossible to get through the programme in one evening, so the tournament will be spread over two evenings, Monday and Tuesday next. To have such a record number of entries astaunded the authorities, but they were still further pleased to find among the entrants several well-known crack boxers actually residing at North Shore. Aucklanders have seldom had a chance of seeing the best of the navy’s boxers in action. With the exception of the men of the Diomede, which is sailing to-morrow for Portsmouth, the men taking part on May 21 and 22 will represent the best of the pugilistic talent of the remainder of the New Zealand Division. Every one' of the 19 competitors from the warships is in hard training, and looking forward eagerly to next week’s bouts. CHAMPION AXEMAN

WHATA GREEN’S VICTORY A PURSE OF £IOO Whata Green, of Kawhia, Waika%, New Zealand’s champion axeman (standing chop), defeated Amos Murrell, the Queensland champion (underhand chop), in a three-cut underhand contest (15-inch blocks) In the Otorohanga Town Hall for a purse of £IOO on Monday evening last. Green, who is 33 years old, was again successful, though Murrell, who is 43 years of age, nearly succeeded in making a dead-heat of It. It is understood that Murrell is prepared to issue a further challenge, for the best of three cuts in IS-inch blocks.
