MONEY FOR PERMIT EXTENSIONS COUNTRYMAN GOES TO GAOL “He has learned a severe lesson, and many avenues of life are now closed to him by reason of his conviction” said Mr. Tong when Charlie Lee, a Chinaman, aged 52, was brought before Mr. Justice MacGregor for sentence this morning. Prisoner had been found guilty of obtaining money by false pretences. It was stated Lee had never been convicted of dishonesty during his 30 years’ residence in the Dominion. The Chinese missionary was prepared to look after him in future. Sentence of three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent, was imposed on Lee by his Honour, who commented that he had been found guilty on four charges of obtaining money from his countrymen by falsely representing to them that he could prolong their “holiday” in New Zealand.
